For many in the Boomer generation, the 1960s and 1970s were a real coming of age era. We were ready to change the world for the better with slogans and actions, like “Give Peace A Chance” and “Flower Power”. This led to a relaxed and diverse wardrobe.
Long flowing Paisley dresses were one representation of the Hippie Love Child Costume. Matching tops and pants like the Flower Power Hippie Costume are another great look.
For the guys a Faux Suede Hippie Vest can be worn over a variety of shirts and bell-bottom pants or jeans.
On the London scene, mini skirts and tight suits like the Beatles were wearing were the rage in the early sixties. Some of the British invasion had an effect on the club scene outfits. The Hippie Chick Dress, with the white go-go boots works for both the disco look and flower power.
In the States, a more natural style became popular. There were still mini skirts and bright colors available, but Granny dresses, peasant blouses, bell-bottom jeans and suede vests were added to the mix. If you have ever seen the early Sonny and Cher outfits, that was the look for many teens and 20 somethings.
Dudes and chicks both wore their hair long and straight or in a natural Afro. Paisley and leather headbands were used to give a little control to this hairstyle. Flowers were also woven into both sexes hair and became a hippie symbol which was painted on vans and just about anything that stayed still long enough. I had flower stickers on my little convertible.
Bell-bottom pants were paired with tie-dyed shirts and blouses and allowed an individual expression, Peace signs and symbols were also used on clothes, earrings, necklaces and belt buckles.
Flower child became part of the language and actual rose-colored glasses, in hearts and other shapes, were worn as a special touch. Of course, once these articles became popular enough, they joined all the other commercially made products
Hippie clothing took on a Gypsy style, “Love is all we need” became the mantra of a generation of young people, and Woodstock showed they could get along, even when the weather and lack of supplies tested their mettle.
TV shows like Laugh-in showcased the funny side of the political scene, and this included the Hippie movement, both the fashions and the spaced-out sounding speech. One of my favorite characters was George Carlin’s “Hippie Dippy Weather Man”, a hilarious part of the “Smothers Brothers Show”.
Hand-tooled leather products – hats, belts, fringed vests and boots – were bartered and sold at concerts and fairs across the country, with the Mecca being San Francisco. Although drugs like pot and LSD were associated with the Hippie culture, as a rule the laid back attitude was a big result of the movement.
I think that no Hippie Halloween costume would be complete without sandals and peace symbol medallions. If you are in a colder clime, socks are an option many party goers sport. Add some love beads and a flower over your ear and party like it’s 1969!

The Hippie society is still alive today. A lot of the flower power clothing and music that fueled the movement is popular and the underlying politics are part of a lifestyle that is very appealing to many people.
The name Hippie has also been associated with liberal ideals and earned them other names, like treehugger, pothead and freak. Part of that attitude is the result of some of them using LSD, nicknamed Acid, and smoking marijuana or weed. They were encouraged to get high and drop out of society.
